French Oak Altar Counter

£2,895.00

An Exceptional 19th-Century French Gothic Revival Ecclesiastical Counter.

Sourced from Central France, dating to approximately 1880 - 1890, and believed to originate from a church in the Pays de La Loire region as an altar counter. Beautifully crafted in solid oak and retaining a remarkable sense of character and architectural presence.

The front incorporates eight generous drawers, arranged in two rows, with traditional carved oak knobs. Below, the full width open recessed section provides useful display or storage space.

The reverse is particularly striking, with a long architectural composition of Gothic carved panels centred around two prominent crosses, framed by fluted pilasters and surmounted by a finely pierced Gothic frieze. This beautifully finished reverse makes the counter unusually versatile, allowing it to be positioned where both sides can be appreciated.

A compelling example of 19th-century French ecclesiastical craftsmanship, this counter would make an extraordinary architectural statement in a substantial entrance hall, kitchen, dining room, retail interior, hotel, restaurant or private collection.
