19th Century French Oak Desk
A superbly unique and large French oak bureau.
Consisting of an 19th century (possibly earlier) coffer that was likely converted to a desk in the 1930s/40s.
'Coffer bureaus' were created in France in the early 20th century by notable men such as lawyers, solicitors and doctors, who sought large freestanding desks of grandeur. At this time there were many 18th/19th century coffers from chateaus and estates that were no longer desired or thought to be useful pieces of furniture. Thus the coffers were perfect for conversion in to one-off statement desks. Their decoratively panelled back and sides proved perfect for central positioning within an office or study.
This one is crafted from superior quarter sawn French oak with a beautifully rustic three plank desk top. The top displays super character and grain detail through age and wear.
Two large and deep drawers with brass cup handles to one side and open shelves to the other.
Oak panelled back and sides in super condition. The original coffer latch still adorns the reverse.
Wonderfully crafted, beautifully restored and a fine French antique desk of grandeur.
