17th Century Oak Sideboard

£2,250.00

A large predominantly oak carved sideboard / dresser from Normandy, circa 1600s.

Consisting of a contemporary oak and cherry wood carcass around a 400 year old hand carved front panel. The carcass was likely crafted to preserve the front panel which is believed to have derived from a 17thC French marriage chest.

The front panel features intricate hand-carved geometric patterns with flower motifs, typical of Northern France in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Its rail is incised with initials and dated '1627', a common feature in Tudor and Stuart furniture.

The chest's original hand-forged Gothic-style lock-plate sits centre stage. Its intricate ironwork displays ornate scrolls and a robust mounting plate. The lock-plate is now purely decorative.

Solid oak top with rich grain detail and tone.

One full width mid-way solid pine shelf and a further matching base level shelf, together they offer ample storage space. Along with the two front doors there are also two unexpected side doors providing access at each end.

Fully restored to retain its history and wear.

A great talking point and would make a huge impression in any environment.
